Wat Sri Suphan, Chiang Mai

A wat which is easily missed is Wat Sri Suphon amidst the lanes of silver village off Wua lai road in Chiang Mai. That is one reason why it does not get too many tourists. Built in 1500 by Phaya Mueang Kaeo of Mengrai dynasty, very little remains of the original strucure. It has been renovated many a times during the last 500 years. It was consecrated in 1509 and holy relics of Buddha were enshrined here.

The architecture of this place is a combination of Wua lai style and Rattanakosin.
Wua Lai:
The Shan ( Tai Yai) artisans perfecting in silverwork migrated from Thai-Myanmar border and settled in Chiang Mai as that was a flourishing business center at that time. They named it Wua Lai in name of the place in Myanmar from where they came. Soon a new style emerged with the combination of Lanna and the Shan designs. The street of Wua Lai still has many silversmiths making beautiful pieces of handicraft. The artists use silver for making holy images.

Rattanakosin:
Then by 19th century the Burmese immingrants brought their own style - Rattanakosin, commonly known as the Bangkok style. This style dominated the architecture of temples built later.

As you enter nothing special meets your eye. Looking to the left is the main attraction of this place--- Silver Ubosoth!

Points of interest:
  • entry free
  • take time to appreciate the panels outside ubosoth
  • see silver workshop in progress
  • see inside of ubosoth
Viharn:

This viharan was built 200 years ago during the reign of Pra Chao Kaviroros.

I have already mentioned about MOM in my earlier post in Wat Phra That Doi Suthep .

Not to be missed and cannot go unnoticed is the silver ubosoth. Walk your way through the path.
A huge portrait of the King of Thailand, Bhumibol Adulyadejis seen next to ubosoth. The renovation started in 2004. Then in 2007 to commemorate the 80th birthday of King Bhumibol Adulyadej, the temple committee decided to renovate it further.  It was decided that the ubosoth be covered with silver and its alloys.  Silver being reserved for making only holy images.
Ganesha sits by the side of ubosoth.  Below on each side sit a golden and one silver mouse with modak in their hands. Modak  is Ganesh's favorite sweet and is offered to him by his devotees.

Renovation is still continuing. There was paint work going at the entrance when I visited this place in March 2016.
Women are not permitted inside the ubosoth :(

intricately hand crafted chofah
Chofah or chofa are decorative extensions on the roof side of a wat or palace. They are supposed to represent the mythical bird Garuda, the mount of Hindu god Vishnu and can be seen in South Asian countries as Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and Thailand.
Kinnaras welcoming at the entrance of ubosoth
Kinnar(male) and Kinnari (female) as are mythical celestial beings who have face of a human being and body of a bird. Mostly adorning the entrance to a temple, these Kinnars keep a watch on the well being of devotees.
Main deity in ubosoth which is 500 years old, is Phra Putta Pathiharn Ming Kwan Pra Mueang Kaew Nopburi Sri Chiang Mai.
It was earlier called Phra Chao Jed Tue.
Since I could not go inside the ubosoth, my husband took some pictures for me.

On the occasion of King's 60 year rule, the Royal emblem of Thailand (Garuda) was brought and placed on the left side of ubosoth very close to viharn and near to the chedi.

The big one shows Garuda holding two serpents in two hands and head under his talons.

Chedi being renovated

There is also a workshop where students learn and continue the ancient art of silver work with the help of Lanna School of Ancient Arts. This is helping in keeping the tradition of silversmiths alive.

relics found inside
The chedi which was taller than a three-storey building began leaning to one side. Soon cracks appeared at the base of the structure. The place had heavy rains and on September 29, 2022, the chedi collapsed.
Many Buddha statues made from glass and carved stone were found in the rubble. Other antiques were also found.

Wat Suan Dok Mai, Chiang Mai

Every wat I have so far visited in Chiang Mai is so different and has a character of its own. Wat Suan Dawg or Suan Dok is situated just on the side of Suthep road a little further on the west of the old city.
What you see in front as you enter is a congregation of white chedis some small and some big.

Built in 1373, by King Kue Na of Mengrai dynasty, the wat gets its name from the royal garden which was present at this place. Suan Dawg" means "golden flower".

Purpose behind building this wat:
I have already mentioned the legend of white elephant in my post on Wat Phra That Doi Suthep. I am in that case briefly writing about it.
Monk Sumana came to Chiang Mai along with Buddha relic bone, the King built this place for him to stay. The bone split into two. The smaller piece was enshrined in the golden chedi at this place and the larger piece was enshrined in Wat Phra That Doi Suthep.

Large number of white colored chedis are seen on entrance. These contain ashes of members of the Chiang Mai royal family. So, it is a royal cemetery.

golden chedi
This 48 meter golden bell shaped chedi is made in Sri Lankan style and enshrines the holy relic (small piece of Buddha).

An important feature in this wat is that the chedi is open on all four sides and is guarded by nagas at entrance. The doorway has makars on either side.

On top of the golden chedi is a square plateform (harmika) with mosaic work. Above the square plateform just below the umbrella Buddha images surround the shaft.

This wat is the center of Mahachulalongkorn Rajavidyalaya Buddhist University where monks pursue their studies.

Points of interest:
  • collection of white chedis
  • huge golden chedi
  • beautiful ubosoth

Wat Phra Singh, Chiang Mai

Situated in the old city, Phra Buddhasihing or Phra Singh was built by King Pha Yu of Mengrai dynasty in 1345 with the purpose of honoring his father King Kham Fu's ashes. It was named Wat Li Chiang Phra. In 1367, image of Phra Singh Buddha was brought here and the name was changed to Wat Phra Singh.

After some time, viharn and other additions were made to the wat. It is the largest wat in the city of Chiang Mai.

Phra Chao Thong Tip
A large gold and copper Buddha called Phra Chao Thong Tip majestically sits at the end of viharn in Bhumisparsha mudra. Bhumi: earth, sparsh: touch, mudra: posture). Mara, the demon came to distract Buddha from meditating, Buddha touched the earth with his right hand to beckon mother earth. Mother earth came in the form of a woman, wringed her hair drowning Mara.

Viharn Lai Kham:
Walking between trees lined path, you reach viharn Lai Kham.

viharn Lai Kam

The beautiful assembly hall or vihara or viharn was built to install the image of Phra Singh Buddha in 1367. The teak wood viharn is made in red and gold and is a perfect example of Lanna architecture.

a close up
Phra Singh Buddha is said came from India via Sri Lanka and was housed here. The head of original Phra Singh Buddha was apparently stolen in 1922 and has been replaced by a new one.

Every year during Songkran festival which is held in April, the statue is taken in a procession through the streets of Chiang Mai and people sprinkle water over it

Phradhatluang (chedi)
This is the oldest structure in this wat and contains the ashes of King Pha Yu's father. The golden chedi has a square base from which emerge golden elephants. On top of it stands a bell shaped chedi.
The whole chedi rests on a rectangular white base.
A small chedi stands just beside the golden one.

The five-tiered chedi is just behind viharn Lai Kham. It was built by King Mueangkaeo and contains ancient relics.
Moving straight ahead and we reach the temple of reclining Buddha.

Ubosot:
Retracing our steps back do not miss to see the Ubosot.
If you enter from the viharn side then it is the south side. This side is for monks to enter. The entrance on the opposite is the north side and is designated for the nuns.
Phra uposatha or ubosoth
As soon as you enter, you see a huge mondop or mandapa with beautiful spired roof. Four almost realistic statues of monks sit deep in meditation. For a minute I thought they were real. They would put Madame' Tussaud's to shame !
The end towards the monk has an image of Phrasingh Buddha.

This side has statues of nuns sitting with a replica of emerald Buddha on the mondop. The original emerald Buddha is in Wat Phra Kaew in Bangkok.

Points of interest:
  • Statue of Phra Singh Buddha
  • murals in Viharna Lai Kam
  • golden chedi near it
  • ubosot
  • reclining Buddha
